Cleanse your hands… and purify your hearts…

Tags :

“Those conflicts and disputes among you, where do they come from? Do they not come from your cravings that are at war within you?Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands… and purify your hearts…” -James 4:1-8

As we move away from Confrontation and begin to look towards Resolution we start at the very roots of the process. In order for there to be any from of resolution something needs to be surrendered. More often than not that thing is our pride—the ever daunting cloud of comparison that lingers over us daily. “I’m right!” “What makes them so special?” “I deserve something more.”  And the longer we brew over these comparisons the more upheaval we will experience. Tonight we look into how to filter thru the good and the bad in our lives and what it is to cleanse your hands, and purify your hearts, and draw nearer to God as we move towards resolution amongst each other and within ourselves.

Tonight we gather at our usual time. Doors open at 3:30, dinner at 5:15, and the experience to follow.

Hope to see you out!

Philippians 4:8-9

Good afternoon!

Tonight we will gather for our Outreach Night experience as usual. Doors will open at 3:30, dinner at 5:15, and the experience to follow. Tonight we look at our view of self and how we shade and inform this canvas we call life. Are our breath strokes adding beauty or dissonance? Do we see the effects of our actions or are we looking past our footprint, never noticing the shifts that our steps have caused? Tonight we explore seeing the world thru God’s lens and viewing ourselves through His eyes.

“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious—the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse. Put into practice what you learned from me, what you heard and saw and realized. Do that, and God, who makes everything work together, will work you into his most excellent harmonies.”

-Philippians 4:8-9

Happy Autumnal Equinox!

Happy Autumnal Equinox!

Fall is officially here and I couldn’t be more excited about it! Long sleeved tees, leaves changing, and pumpkin flavored everything! With the onset of Fall one notion is clear: change is always happening; change of weather, change of attitude, or change of perspective. We are always adjusting and adapting, like the trees, conditioning and preparing ourselves for what is to come.

Sometimes we have to condition ourselves for a long rocky winter, when resources become scares and the environment brutal. Sometimes we prepare ourselves for harvest and feast. No matter what we are enduring and what changes come our way it is crucial that we keep vigilant watch over our hearts. (Proverbs 4:23) Remaining mindful not to strategize and align ourselves with fruitless banter but keeping focused on what is true and what is pure and what is right. (Philippians 4:8)

Tonight we take a look at the Power of Integrity. Do our actions back our talk and when we speak are we fully ready to live by the standards in which we boast? When we are forced into survival mode what instincts guide our actions?  Tonight we explore such questions and more. We will end our evening with an opportunity for youth to be baptized.

Tonight doors open at 3:30, dinner at 5:15, and the experience to follow after.

Hope to see you out!

The Power of Respect

Happy National Play Doh Day!!!

I know if you’re anything like me you’ve been waiting all year for National Play Doh Day! Well, my friends, you can rest at ease—it’s here!  In celebration of this national day we are going to have ourselves a good old fashioned Outreach Night Experience. A night filled with time to play basketball and hang out with friends and peers starting at 3:30, a family dinner where we can all eat and relish in the simple joys of life together at 5:15, and a group experience to follow at 6!

Sounds like a typical Outreach night, you say? Well… I suppose it is. But let that not deter you from  relishing the joy that Play Doh once brought to your life. So in the spirit of Play Doh and out of the respect we have for the institution for which it played in our lives we honor Play Doh by offering a evening of fun and playfulness!

Join us as we take a look at the power of respect in our lives and our relationships.

Hope to see you out!

Trains

Tonight we continue to play with the metaphor of trains. Last week we heard a story of a man’s dream, his travel down a railway leading to his personalized hell and how in the midst of despair grace found him and he found salvation from that track. As we look at the path that we are headed down, it’s also important to recognize the path that we’ve come from. Are are actions narrations of our intent?

Tonight we take a look at Power. What is true power and where does it come from? Is power the ability to get someone to do something for you or is it the ability to do something for someone else? Join us as we board the trains of thought behind true power!

Tonight doors open at 3:30, dinner at 5:15, and the experience to follow.

Also, V.I.P. will be hosting its next Open Mic Night this Sunday, Sept. 13, starting at 7pm and going until 11pm. If you’d like to have the experience of a lifetime, please pencil it in!

Happy Wednesday

A few things I would like to mention this afternoon:

  1. HAPPY WEDNESDAY! I hope everyone has been having a good week so far. I know that as we get towards the middle of our weeks we can really start to get tired and begin to drag a little bit—especially as the work week starts to pile on the stresses! That’s why it is so important for us to be able to find times where we can pause for a moment from the grind of the week, find something relaxing and/or rejuvenating to boost our morale, and enter back into our week. Pause, Pray/Play, Proceed! Which leads me to:
  2. OUTREACH NIGHT! Tonight we will explore conflict in the world through tackling great feats of engineering! You will be required to imagine big and play hard. So be ready! Tonight we will open the doors at 4, dinner at 5:15, and the experience to follow at 5:45.
  3. AFTER SCHOOL HOURS. Starting Thursday we will shift to our after school hours. Instead of opening at 12 for lunch OASIS will open its doors Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 3:30. On Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 4:30 we will enter into what we’re calling “Express Yourself”, which will be opportunities for Staff, Friends of OASIS, and other individuals and groups to share skills or passions with our participants. Dinner will then be provided at 5:15 and we will either enter into scheduled programming or closing at 6, depending on the day. And finally—
  4. OPEN MIC NIGHT. V.I.P.’s second Open Mic Night is this Sunday starting at 7pm in the Activity Room. Admission is only $5, but the experience is one you will never forget! Come on out and experience the energy and spirit that thrives in the midsts of the creative and inspired minds of our community! Whether you have something on your heart you would like to offer or you just want to sit back and enjoy, there’s something for everyone at a V.I.P. Open Mic Night.

Hope to see you out!

I hope that everyone has been having a great week so far!

Tonight will be a typical Outreach Night Experience. Doors will open at 4, dinner at 5:15, and the Experience to follow afterwards. Last week we took a look at Inner Conflict—what are the things that we are holding on to that keep us trapped, or unable to move forward. This week we will branch out and look more closely at conflicts in relationships; specifically when dealing with our relationships between race and culture. There is a great deal of disconnect, even amongst communities, and those barriers can not be broken down if we can not first find a way to create a relationship. It is through relationship that we can begin to find understanding and conflict can then begin to actually be addressed. Hope to see you all out tonight!
